Samuel Barclay Beckett was born on Good Friday, April 13, 1906, in Foxrock, Ireland, near Dublin. He studied modern languages at Trinity College in Dublin and graduated in 1927. The following year, Beckett went to Paris, where he quickly became acquainted with a group of avant-garde artists, including James Joyce. William Hutt was born in 1920 and raised in Toronto. During World War II he earned the Military Medal for his frontline services as a medic. Subsequently he graduated from Trinity College University of Toronto, where he started acting at the Hart House Theatre. In the late 1940s Hutt made his debut in Ontario summer stock companies and was recruited by Ottawa's Canadian Repertory Theatre.
